Urchin 6 Specifications

Technical detail for your enjoyment!

Software Specifications:

Urchin Software is an installable software product that requires server side configuration, database setup, and log processing. Maintenance of Urchin software entails significant technical overhead, since system administrators will need to monitor log files, backup data and perform product updates.

The Software should be set up by a system administrator with access to webserver logs. It comes bundled with an Apache webserver binary for configuration and report delivery, and uses 3rd party database software (mysql or postgresql depending on platform).

Basic system recommendations: Windows server OS, Linux 2.4/2.6 kernel, and FreeBSD; 2gb ram, 250gb drive

Hardware Recommendations:

Urchin 6 will run on legacy hardware, but you will get significantly better performance with newer gear. The below specs are NOT minimum requirements -- these are merely recommendations based on our internal testing efforts:

- Processor: 2 GHz or better (64-bit processors are not supported natively, but work with 32-bit emulation)
- Memory: 2 GB or more
- Storage: Application files are ~620 MB, report files are ~40% of raw log file size (per profile)

Helpful Technical Notes:

Installer file info: The Urchin 6 installer will be one of several types depending on your operating system:

Windows: an InstallShield setup.exe style executable installer

RedHat 5/6/7/8, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X 10.1: an executable shell archive that unpacks into a set of installation files

RedHat 8/9: a compressed tar image in .tar.gz form that contains the install files

Sun Cobalt: a pkg package installer that installs through the Cobalt interface

Platform Support:

Broad range of Linux platforms supported with only 2 builds (Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels)

Added support for FreeBSD 5 and FreeBSD 6

Dropped support for MacOS X and Solaris (Google may reconsider this support if sufficient demand is demonstrated)

Configuration:

Relational database (MySQL or PostgreSQL) administrative configuration backend
- This is a major upgrade from Urchin 5 because using a SQL database makes the configuration a much more standardized process (more user friendly).

Task Scheduler:

Scheduler now runs as two processes - master scheduler and slave scheduler

Tasks easily managed via scripting interface to back end configuration database

Urchin Support

As a logfile analyzer, one concern may be how to control the size of your logfiles. Urchin can be set up in such a way to maintain the logfiles itself. Manage your Urchin installation smart from the very start.

We'd be happy to help you with your Urchin installation! Check out our support plan options for further details.
