What Is Urchin Software?
Urchin is a web analytics solution similar in scope to Google Analytics, but is a software version that is installed, hosted, and managed by the customer. Urchin helps website owners better understand their online marketing initiatives, website traffic characteristics, and visitor's browsing experience.
Those who benefit from Urchin the MOST would be those who prefer to keep their data on machines they control, those who would like to process historical data, those who need their data audited by third parties, and those who would like to track an intranet. Examples of companies who have purchased Urchin in the past are government institutions, large corporations, and universities and colleges. How Does Urchin Software Work?
Urchin Software is an installable software product that requires server side configuration, database setup, and log processing. It comes bundled with an Apache webserver binary for configuration and report delivery, and uses 3rd party database software (mysql or postgresql depending on platform). Basic System Recommendations: Windows server OS, Linux 2.4/2.6 kernel, and FreeBSD; 2gb ram, 250gb drive. Click here for more Urchin technical specifications.
How Are Urchin and Google Analytics Different?
The major difference between Urchin and Google Analytics is that Urchin is hosted by the user, which requires technical setup to process log files. However, the analytics data is housed internally and locally so there are more options for re-processing and customizing the data. Unlike Google Analytics, Urchin is not free (there is a $2,995 license fee) and requires experienced technical staff for installation.
