New and Improved: Google AdWords Conversion Tracking by Type

By Erin Skinner, PPC Specialist
new_and_improved.jpg Are you sure that the conversions you see tracked in the Google AdWords Campaign Summary page are really the conversions you're hoping for? How do you know what types of conversions your AdWords campaigns are generating if you have the AdWords Conversion Tracking script on many of your site's success pages?

It's best practice to send a searcher to a landing page that has one clearly defined action that you would like them to take, say filling out a Contact Us form. But what happens when that Contact Us page links to another page on your site with a completely different desired action, say a newsletter sign up? If the searcher clicks on an ad that takes them to the Contact Us landing page but somehow moves over to the newsletter page and signs up there, you've still got a conversion reported for your Contact Us campaign. The problem is that it's the wrong type!

Now, when you look in your Contact Us campaign, you think you're only generating leads for people raising their hands to be contacted, but you've actually got people who are just interested in reading your newsletter lumped in there as well. It can be very misleading.

Google AdWords has created a way to track your conversions by type.

As it always has, AdWords will generate the conversion tracking script for you after you fill in a handful of settings (text format, background color, security level, etc.), but now you can give the particular conversion type a name. This provides you with much more detail on how your AdWords campaigns are performing.

If you look in the Campaign Summary section of your account, you will still see conversions reported just as you always have.

They will be grouped by campaign, and not by action. However, it is very easy to see conversion performance by action; you don't even have to run a report! Simply click on the Conversion Tracking link under the Campaign Management tab. You will see all of the conversion types you've created and how many times your AdWords account has achieved those specific actions for you in the date range you've selected.

By clicking on the action name, you will be able to see which campaigns and ad groups generated the specific results you're looking for. Now you can have a much clearer picture of what types of conversions you're paying for and can manage your accounts accordingly.

Hi Erin,

This is a great feature, but I don't see which keywords generated the specific conversion as you state in your post. I see the campaign and the ad group. Is there a way to show keywords?

@Jesse: Good catch. As it turns out, Google has not made this functional on the keyword level yet. I've updated the post to reflect this.

@Jesse I'm beta'ing a tool that tracks conversions back to the specific keyword used in the user's search (as well as the bid term that was triggered for the search term).

The tool is called "Tracked.to" - and it went into beta the week before the new conversion codes changed.

That caused some problems for them updating their conversion tracking codes! ;)

@Erin Great post. You're spot on, being able to categorize conversions into more than 5 groups means big things for Adwords performance tracking.

@AdWords Monitor, It's always great to have new tools! You can already track conversions to exact keywords using Google Analytics. Michael Harrison's post explains how.

@Jesse, Using AdWords, you are able to track conversion by type to keywords by running a keyword report. Just make sure you check "action name", "action description", and "action category" under the Add or Remove Columns section before running the report.

1) Can I have 2 names of the same "sign up" AdWords conversion type, and have AdWords report these 2 "sign up's" as different conversions reported for each of the specified names?

2) "Using AdWords, you are able to track conversion by type to keywords by running a keyword report." - can you elaborate on this?

Posted by: Ben at July 1, 2008 3:57 PM

@Ben: These are both great questions. 1) You can have as many conversion "types" as you need, whether they are purchases, sign ups, or leads. Labeling these action descriptions is simply to allow you to categorize your conversions. 2) To attribute the conversions to keywords, simply run a Placement/Keyword Performance report in the Reports tab of the AdWords interface. In the Advanced Settings section, click "Add or Remove Columns." Check the boxes by "Action Name", "Action Description", and "Action Category" as well as all other details you're interested in. When you run the report, you will see the conversion types detailed for each keyword.

I'm having trouble with implementing conversion tracking into joomla/virtuemart. My main action - adding a product to basket is enabled, but I find tracking of shipping info, selection of payment method etc - virtually impossible.
I tried searching for a solution, but had no luck so far. I really need it for my beauty salon equipment store.
I'm considering a transition to oscommerce if nothing else helps...

@Ivan: Conversion Tracker is not really designed to measure steps along your funnel. That's something that Google Analytics would be much better suited for. Conversion Tracker is best used for a single primary action on your site, like a purchase, and not for secondary actions, like adding a product to the basket.

I would make sure the Conversion Tracking code is only on the purchase receipt page, and use a web analytics package (like Google Analytics) to measure everything else.

I have managed several accounts that utilized multiple conversion types. The only way to seperate the two that I can see is running reports with sales and leads, or other conversion types checked off. It would be nice to be able to seperate this on the platform without having to run reports! Maybe adwords will make this a feature one day. :-)
