Hallelujah! The Best New Google Analytics Feature

By Meredith Smith, Director of Marketing

The new Google Analytics interface has so many great new features that using it is almost like a treasure hunt - you never know what you'll discover next!

Personally, my favorite new feature so far is the email functionality. I don't know about you, but I don't look into Google Analytics nearly as often as I'd really like to (let's keep that between us, though, ok?).

Apparently I'm not alone. According to a Jupiter report, "Key Performance Indicators - Using Analytics to Drive Action", a stunningly large percentage of companies don't bother to distribute analytic reports to the people within the company who can use them!

Less then 20% of the companies surveyed distribute analytics data to merchandising departments for review on a regular basis, and only 53% of marketing teams review analytics data. But surely the executives pay attention to the analytics data?

Actually, only 41% of executives review web analytics data.

And that is why the new email function is my favorite. You can use the little 'email' button found under the title of the report, and there you will find 3 tabs: Send Now, Schedule, or Add to Existing.

You can send a 1-time email with the "Send Now" tab. You have four format choices for the report: PDF, XML, CSV, or TSV.

The option to send emails as a PDF is new, and super-neat since you finally get the images from the reports, too! Now it is easier then ever to send a report to a colleague or client without having to cut and paste or send a spreadsheet that is sometimes a little hard to explain.

With the "Schedule" tab you can schedule re-occurring emails. There are 4 possible time intervals:
- Daily (sent each morning),
- Weekly (sent each Monday),
- Monthly (sent first day of each month),
- Quarterly (sent first day of each quarter)

There are a few reports that I check on a regular basis, so I just added them to the email schedule and now the reports show up in my email box like magic.

The "Add to Existing" tab allows you to see what reports are being sent on a reoccurring basis already, and lets you add other reports as you need to.

Now that the new interface has been rolled out to everybody, what is your favorite part of the new interface?

Was Hoping For...

- More than 4 goals
- Raw search term for PPC

Tyson:

You mention you were hoping for the raw search terms from PPC.

We explain how to get that info in the blog article "Exact Keyword Tracking with Google Analytics, Revisited".

Posted by: Meredith Smith at May 23, 2007 9:30 AM

Yes, I use that method and it works pretty well. It just seems silly that we have to use a hack to get this basic information.

Posted by: Tyson at May 23, 2007 10:21 AM

Yeah, I know what you mean.

They update Google Analytics on a pretty regular basis - maybe that isn't too far behind.

Email is great, but there's an upper limit for scheduling them: it's 12. Google told me that there's no way around this yet.

Oh - good point, Chris!

Thanks for the info.

Search engine specialists are going to love the new Google Analytics. I'm sure these tools were always here, but now they are so much easier to find and much more visually informative.

The new Google Analytics is great! It looks like it was designed especially for search marketing specialists.

One thing I miss, however, is the possibility to drill down to the refering url's from the Google Content network, beyond the "googlesyndication"...

Just how accurate is Google Analytics data for PPC?

I ran a very small one month test on a one page website... The regular Adwords report said I got a certain number of clicks for $200 adspend, Google Analytics reported a much lower number of clicks for $30 adspend.

My credit card company reported I was charged $200 by Google.

Anyone else see a discrepancy between Google Analytics data and actual real world data?

Does anyone know the time frame that Google updates the stats on a daily basis - is it every hour? There is always a delay in the stats.

Posted by: Tim at September 26, 2007 11:08 AM

@Tim:

You can usually rely on data within Analytics updating every 4 hours or so, but please be aware that it can sometimes take up to 48 hours depending on a number of factors. I would say as a general rule that you should give the data 24 hours before you make any decisions based on it.
