Google Analytics: Extreme Makeover Edition

May 8, 2007

thumb1.gifYes, Google Analytics has been redesigned. Please do not panic.

As several folks noticed last week, Google has redesigned Google Analytics. Log into your account and you'll be met by an announcement:

Over the next several weeks, we will be migrating all existing Analytics accounts to the new Google Analytics interface. You will be notified by email once your account has been migrated. For an entire month you will be able to access both the original interface and the new interface. During the migration, you should experience no interruption in service and you’ll be able to see all of your data regardless of which interface you use. For a sneak peek at the new Google Analytics, take a look at the following resources.

Change can be a tough thing to come to terms with. Some people might wonder why Google is changing everything just as they've started to get used to it.

We loved the old interface, too. Don't get me wrong. It's kind of like those ridiculous makeover shows on TV. Sure, you love your mom before she gets her wardrobe rebooted, but no one's complaining when she comes back minus the muumuu.

Let me assure you, this redesign is a very good thing. We've been using the new interface for over two months now, and it's made day-to-day analysis a breeze. I've had lots of time working with both, and the new one is superior in almost every way.

Let me just list a few of the most common feature requests we've collected in our two plus years as Google Analytics Authorized Consultants:

I guess our tireless haranguing made its ways to the right ears at Mountain View, because all of these things have been added to the redesigned Google Analytics.

comparison_sm.gifNot to mention the data has been consolidated. Previously, you had to go from report to report to report to find what you were looking for. This was fine for those of us who knew what we were doing, but sometimes it seemed a little clunky and unintuitive. Now, your data is right in front of you, always within just a click or two. A lot of people were wondering what Google has done with the Measure Map/Adaptive Path team that they acquired last Valentine's Day. Based on the updated geolocation map in GA (see the image to the right) and some other updates to the report interface, I'm guessing Jeff Veen and Company have been hard at work alongside the Analytics team. You really couldn't pick a more talented group of guys to handle your UI.

Trust me. You're going to love the changes. You've just got to give them time. Once you do, you'll never be able to go back. And you've got a month to get used to everything. Which is why we will be offering an updated version of our extremely popular Google Analytics Training Series beginning on August 9th. Reserve your seat today to learn everything there is to know about the new Google Analytics. By the end of the six week training, you'll be in love.

These images and screen-shots that I have been seeing on this blog and others look fantastic to me. I can't wait until our GA accounts get updated with the new interface.

These updates look very promising. And the update couldn't have come at a better time vis a vis the new Gatineau tool launch.

I am looking forward to when my account gets updated.

my account's been updated & i have to say it seems fantastic so far. The scheduled reporting was the big omission for me &, now that's gone, this really does handle everything most clients need.

as with everything google does - very customer-focussed. they seem to have really thought about their market & catered for it beautifully.
